NSS Symbol

The Emblem of NSS is based on the “Rath” wheel of the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. This giant wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release. And signify the movement in life across time and space. It also stands for dynamism and progressive outlook of youth.

The Konark wheel in the emblem has eight-bars, which represent Eight Pahars in the cycle of 24 hours of the day. Hence, the Badge rewinds the wearer to be readdress for service of the Nations round the clock, i.e. for 24 X7. The red colour in the Badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood, i.e. lively, active energic and full of high spirit. The Navy-blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

A Brief History Of National Service Scheme (Nss)

National Service Scheme was launched on 24th September 1969 for all undergraduate students which also happened to be the centenary year for the services of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. It was launched in 37 Universities, involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service. After independence, the University Grants Commission, headed by S. Radhakrishnan, recommended the introduction of voluntary National service in academic institutions. This idea was again considered by the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) at its meeting in January, 1950.

After examining the idea and the experiences of other countries in this field, the board recommended that students and teachers should devote time to voluntary manual work. In the draft first Five-Year Plan adopted by the government in 1952, the need for social and labour service by Indian students for one year was stressed.

In 1958, the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, in a letter to the chief ministers, considered the idea of social service as a prerequisite for graduation. He directed the Ministry of Education to formulate a suitable scheme for the introduction of national service into academic institutions.

Nss Activities At A Glance

Higher Education today is no longer confined to teaching and research but promotes extension activity. In order to make NSS socially relevant and community-oriented, it encourages linkage between college to village and campus and community. NSS is a flagship programme of students’ youth service and aims at sensitising the students about the need for community service. It provides students an opportunity to understand the community they live with, work for while identifying the needs and problems of the community. It develops among students social and civic responsibility; skills of mobilising community participation; acquisition of leadership quality and democratic attitude; dealing with emergency and natural disasters; national integration, etc. The NSS Volunteers undertake two types of activities: Regular Activities and Special Camping Programmes. A student enrolled as NSS volunteers will have to put in 120 hours for community work in a year for a period of 2 years. He/she is likely to participate in different programmes and projects under NSS. Special camps include adoption of villages and small areas for their holistic development. These camps and activities have contributed towards skill education, environment, health and sanitation, literacy, blood donation, disaster management, legal awareness, programme formulation. counselling, implementation, evaluation, etc.

Programme Organised

The aim of the Regular and Special Camping Programme is to bring youth face to face with the community and make efforts to improve their life.
  • Regular Activities:
  • The NSS volunteers are to devote about 120 hours in Regular Activities for the development of the community.
  • Special Activities:
  • Special Camping has been conceived as an opportunity to live with that community for 7 days, and experience the conditions and problems of the people. The NSS volunteers need to be inspired to take initiatives for the improvement of their condition. Although the focus of the Special Camps changes periodically and regular programmes are organized in response to the community needs at the micro-level.
