The Post Graduate Department of English welcomes its alumni, current and prospective students, and visitors from around the world to learn about its facilities and programmes, and to discover its range of courses, activities and events.

The Department of English was established in the year 1976 in Berhampur University. It offers a two-year Master’s degree programme, Ph.D Programmes and an M. Phil programme, which were introduced in 1977. The intake is 50 students at the M.A. and 8 at the M.Phil level, respectively. The Ph.D students are enrolled each year as per the seats available with expert faculty after qualifying in the NET/URET of Berhampur University.

The Master’s degree programme is an advanced level course in English literature and Language. This is one of the few Departments in the country offering Master’s level courses in English Language Teaching, Environmental Humanities, Translation and Creative Writing apart from courses in British, American and Indian Literature. Berhampur University is the only university in the state which offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary approaches in M.A and M.Phil./ Ph. D courses with Linguistics and ELT as Core components and American Literature, Ecocriticism, Ecolinguistics, Translation and Creative Writing as electives. The Course offers Professional and Academic Writing in the CBCT (Allied Elective) paper (designed for inter departmental Elective). The M. Phil programme is a research level course comprising Research Methodology, Literary theory, and offers students choice in the between Comparative Literature, Popular Literature and Ecocriticism in the Elective section of the course.

In a nutshell, courses for postgraduates and research students range from Pre-Modern to Modern British literature, Modern Indian Literature, American and World Literatures in English, Critical Theory and cultural studies focused on Dalit and Tribal texts and contexts and Environmental Humanities. Courses link students with interdisciplinary opportunities on and off campus. A distinguished series of speakers, symposia and conferences provide a context for sustained learning and debate within the humanities. The Ecolinguistics paper has been designed under the mentorship of Prof Arran Stibbe, Gloucester University, UK.

The Department has organised a number of state level, national and international seminars, conferences, Extra mural Lectures, workshops and Refresher Courses. Many distinguished national and international literary figures and noted academicians, including Nobel laureate William Golding, scholars and critics like, Leslie Fiedler, Christopher Norris (introduced Deconstruction to the Department), Al Young (noted African-American Poet), Raman Seldon, Peter Wolfe, Howard Wolfe, Valentine Cunningham, John Worthen, Valerie Miner, Dorothy Deering, Ed O’Shea, Kirsten Shands, Sissy Helf, Carole Barret, Sukhbir Singh, Padmashree Jayanta Mahapatra, Daya Dissanayake, Sunil Govinnage, Alan Johnson, Marzenna Jacubzuk, Iwona Milweska, Brenda Mehta, Arturo Davila, Patrycja Austen, Sooshilla Gopaul, Kamila Junik, Shiela Teffts, A Karunakar, Sushil Sharma, Colin O’Brien et al have visited and lectured in the Department. The Department has a distinct research culture and the faculty and Scholars are actively engaged in research and have several achievements to their credit. The Department has produced many scholars, poets and administrators of repute.

The prime objective of this Department is to prepare quality researchers and teachers in the field of English Literature and Language, both through teaching and research, to meet the demand of the state as well as the country. The objective of the Department is also to enhance the skills of the students so that they can avail myriad job opportunities in the fields of study and in related fields as well. Apart from studies the students and alumni of the department have distinguished themselves in journalism, sports, music and other co-curricular activities at both national and international levels.

Mission
  • To introduce multidisciplinary courses and skilled-based courses like Special Papers in ELT, Environmental Humanities and Translation so that not only the range of knowledge and research widens but also the students become employable.
  • To introduce self-financing courses in Communicative English and Soft Skills that would help both the Department and the University. One or two foreign languages could be taught as self-financing courses in the Language Lab.
  • To make the Department a centre of excellence in interdisciplinary research with special programs like documentation and translation of indigenous culture and literature by way of contributing to the memory of the world.
  • Organising Conferences in these areas and collaborating with UNESCO and other organisations so as to put the Department in the International map of English Studies.
