ABOUT
Department Of Law

The Post Graduate Department of Law, Berhampur University was established in the year 1985. Research-oriented intensive full-time LL.M., Ph.D and LL.D Courses are offered in the Department.

The Department has successfully conducted different certificate and diploma courses viz. (i) UGC sponsored certificate course on Human Rights and Duties Education (ii) UGC sponsored P.G. Diploma Human Rights and Duties Education (iii) P.G. Diploma in Disaster Management.

Further, the Department has organized various National Seminars and legal awareness programmes to inculcate the knowledge of law among students, academia and common masses.
The Legal Aid Clinic of the Department established under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, Ganjam, Berhampur caters the needs of the people of the vicinity in terms of legal assistance and advice.
The Department has brought many laurels in the past years. The students and researchers of the Department are well placed in corporate sector academics, judiciary, civil services and other Government services.

Research Area in the Law

The Department has contributed significantly to the society by conducting quality research. Social relevant research work is a feature of the Department from time of inception.Another significant feature of the Department is that scholars across the country have received Ph.D and LL.D degrees.

The main reasearch areas of the Department are Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Constitutional Law,Business Law; Family Law Environmental Law.

Publication / Achievement / Credentials

The faculties of the Department ,Ph.D and LL.D scholars are continuously publishing research papers in reputed law journals. Further, they have authored book chapters and books. Publishing of the Edited Volumes after conclusion of seminars and conferences is a regular feature of the Department.

Alumni
Department of Law Alumni Association

The Department has an alumni association of Ph.D Degree Holders . The first general body meeting of the alumni citation of Ph.D Degree Holders of Berhampur University was organized on 27th April, 2009. The association from its inception has been extending cooperation and support to the Department in promoting the cause of legal education and research. Besides, the association has organized seminars on different contemporary subjects inviting jurists and law professors across the country.

Further, alumni meet of the Master of Laws (LL.M) 1995-97 batch was organized on 25th December, 2018 in the Gopalpur PWD Guest House.

Seminar, Workshop, Training and Awareness Programmes-

Extension Lectures- Extension lecture is the continuous feature of the Department . The department has organized lecture programme by inviting senior-most academicians, lawyers, legal luminaries at regular interval.

  • Two days National Seminar on Intellectual property Rights: Issues and Challenges sponsored by University Grants Commission, New Delhi was organized on 21st and 22nd December 2011.
  • Two days Legal awareness programme sponsored by the National Commission for Women on Women Related Laws was organized on 4th and 5th March 2017.
  • National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi sponsored One Day Basic Training Programme on Human Rights conducted on 10th November 2018.
  • An awareness programme on human rights was organized in association with District Legal Services Authority, Ganjam, Berhampur on 10th December 2018.
  • Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) based Competition on Laws Relating to Women for University Students sponsored by the National Commission for Women was conducted on 11th December, 2018.
  • National Level Webinar On Right to Health and Covid-19 Pandemic -Issues and Solutions was organized on 15th July, 2020.
  • National Workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution was organised by P.G. Department of Law in association with Pro-Bono Club, P.G. Department of Law on 08.09.2023.
  • The P.G. Department of Law, in collaboration with the Pro-Bono Club, successfully organized a distinguished lecture on the topic “Legal Aid and Access to Justice in India” on 9th November 2023.
  • The Pro-Bono Club of P.G. Department of Law, Berhampur University conducted a legal awareness programme entitled “Role of Mediation as an Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism in settling commercial and community disputes ” on 14.11.2023 .
  • The  P.G. Department of Law, B.U. in association with Pro-Bono Club organized a legal awareness programme on “Laws Relating to Children” on 15.11.2023 at Korapalli High School, Korapalli, Berhampur.
  • A “Consumer Rights Awareness Drive” conducted by P.G. Department of Law, Berhampur University in association with Pro-Bono Club, sponsored by Department of Justice, Government of India on November 7, 2023 at Karapalli Bazar, Berhampur.
  • A Plantation drive was  organised by  Pro-Bono Club,P.G. Department of Law, Berhampur University on 13th July, 2024 commemorating  Van Mahotsav.
